Homeless Outreach Program

The Hillcrest Business Association is connecting with Todd Gloria and the Alpha Project to end homelessness in our city, one neighborhood at a time. After a successful launch of the Downtown Partnership Clean and Safe Program, Hillcrest hopes to join the ranks of neighborhoods assisting the homeless. On Monday April 6th Council Member Todd Gloria, HBA board president Jonathan Hale and Alpha Project CEO Bob McElroy held a press conference at the HUB  to announce the launch of the Hillcrest Homeless Outreach Program (HOP).

The Hillcrest business district is widely known for its compassion and progressive methods to encourage change. The latest neighborhood endeavor will bring city officials, The Hillcrest Business Association and the Alpha Project together in providing homeless outreach during a one-year pilot program.

Over the next year, experts at the Alpha Project will deploy a part time out reach team throughout Hillcrest five days a week to provide homeless outreach services. While in the neighborhood, homeless out reach teams will encourage individuals to engage in activities that will advance their path to recovery. Hillcrest businesses will be provided a “hotline” to notify out reach teams of issues requiring attention.

The HBA hopes to move the homeless outreach program from a pilot to a standard operating procedure in the neighborhood and will continue to look for funding to peruse these efforts into perpetuity.

Help us design Hillcrest’s New Civic Space: Pride Plaza

From March 22 through April 26 atthe Hillcrest Farmers Market, the Hillcrest Business Association is hosting a weekly design lab for the upcoming Normal Street and Pride Plaza project. The Hillcrest Business Association has been in the process of designing a new neighborhood park for this Pride Plaza space and is looking for your input. This community design lab will be held every Sunday at the Hillcrest Farmers Market Information Booth from 9am-2pm.

Come out and play architect for a day and give your design feedback on the three park project proposals. We will have the Farmers Market Information Booth set up as a design studio so you can come in and offer input about the proposals.  The HBA hopes to take your feedback and develop a phase one action plan. Events that utilize this space, such as the Hillcrest Farmers Market and Pride Block Party, have outgrown the current design of the plaza. This redevelopment project will transform Pride Plaza to accommodate the needs of the neighborhood. Options include bike lanes, café-style seating, and expanded open spaces, so come take a look and voice your best ideas!

Normal Street is changing, and we encourage you to be a part of it! Show your design skills and help us create the best Pride Plaza we can.

Hillcrest Taste n Tinis 2014 Recap

Hillcrests signature holiday event Taste n Tinis brought great exposure to Hillcrests businesses this Holiday season.

Tasters and toasters alike were treated to a festive faire from local signature chefs and restaurants, offering an assortment of specialties from mouthwatering appetizers and entrees to decadent sweet treats from over 20 Hillcrest businesses. Hillcrest Taste n Tinis also celebrated the vibrant boutiques and retail stores throughout the neighborhood. In the midst of the culinary merriment “tasters” found joy and warmth indoors by visiting participating retail shops, where you could shop a bit, while sipping on festive cocktails!

There was a great buzz surrounding this years Taste n Tinis and a few of our participating businesses even received some local morning news attention! The word about Taste n Tinis was everywhere and could be found in just about every local publication and newspaper throughout San Diego!

University Avenue Pipeline Project

The City of San Diego is currently overseeing a project to replace 4.33 miles

(22,722 feet) of pipeline within the University Heights, Hillcrest and North Park communities. The University Ave. pipeline project is part of a citywide initiative to replace over 3,250 miles of water pipelines that in some areas are over 100 years old.

Along with providing safe, clean drinking water the project will also improve pedestrian curb ramps to facilitate access with persons of disabilities. City street surfaces will be reconstructed with slurry seal, paving and striping as needed with vegetation and landscaping within the impacted areas as well.

In late 2014 businesses along 5th Ave. in Hillcrest experienced the first wave of construction in the neighborhood. Other areas that will be impacted include businesses along University Ave., Park Blvd., Robinson Ave., and the remainder of 5th Ave.

According to the City of San Diego website, construction is expected to take place through June 2017.  The current plans suggests the following timeline:

Phase 1 Construction Schedule (January 2015 through May 2015**)

University Ave., from Park Blvd. to Oregon St., and on Oregon St. north to Polk Ave.

Phase 2 Construction Schedule (June 2015 through September 2015**)

W. Lewis St., from Stephens St. to Hawk St.

Hawk St., from W. Lewis St. to Washington St.

Washington St., from Hawk St. to 5th Ave.

5th Ave., from Washington St. to University Ave.

Phase 3 Construction Schedule (October 2015 through May 2016**)

University Ave., from 5th Ave. to Park Blvd. 5th Ave.

Phase 4 Construction Schedule (June 2016 through January 2017**)

Robinson Ave., From 5th Ave. to Park Blvd. and on Park Blvd. approximately 60 feet north of Robinson Ave.
